Sounds Market

intro

When people buy groceries, they often consider not only price and convenience but also the overall shopping atmosphere. In other words, people are purchasing an experience, not just products.

In this project, we explored the overall sound experience perception of six different shopping locations in South London. Different colored circles represent different types of sounds. We created an interactive installation where touching a circle plays the corresponding animation and sound. By touching circles in the top, middle, and bottom sections of different markets, the audience can DIY their own shopping atmosphere, creating an immersive sensory experience.

Process
Survey and Analysis

At the beginning of the project, we did not have a clear theme, so we used a random walk method starting from the London College of Communication, deciding a random route using dice. We explored different parts of the city and recorded some interesting sounds. By comparing the different sounds, we quickly noticed the atmosphere differences between various markets. By recording and analyzing sounds from different markets, we categorized these sounds into five types: activities, devices, music, conversations, and traffic, and gave an impression score for each type of sound.

Design and Production

We initially did a simple visualization attempt through hand-drawing to determine the feasibility of this direction. Ultimately, we decided to use a projector and touch sensors to build a dynamic interaction. We further expanded the prototype, adding interactive animations, and decided to let the audience DIY their ideal shopping atmosphere by touching multiple different circles, thereby creating more possibilities.
